Four photo shoots today! And each was as unique as the next. So I picked one of my friend Hunter James Richardson and his high fashion photo shoot. He is an experienced model with a rather extensive career with Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana and others. And it was a lot of fun to work with him. There will be more photos to be released – but I will have to sort them and whittle them down to the best of the best. Danish male fashion model Mathias Lauridsen first drew our attention for his eyes, one of the many factors Emerging Magazine looks for when deciding to feature a male or female model in the magazine. World Model Review, a contributing member of Emerging Magazine presented such a person when he joined Emerging Magazine.

Mathias Lauridsen was born January 13, hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark and has been featured in numerous ad campaigns including Jil Sander, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Lacoste and Hermès.

He was discovered in 2003 and is currently signed with Ford Models in Paris, New York Model Management and Scoop in Copenhagen. Mathias is considered to be one of the top, not to mention, best male models currently, and has landed many lucrative contracts, for example the Gucci Pour Homme II fragrance. His runway credentials include opening shows for Hermès, Belstaff, Jill Stuart and closing for both Valentino and John Galliano.

Fashion Models MaleHe has appeared in editorials for L'Uomo Vogue, Vogue Paris, Numéro Homme, GQ and Details. The photographers he has worked with include Karl Lagerfeld and Richard Avedon.

He was ranked number 1 on models.com Top 50 Male Models list for more than two years. Recently he was replaced by Baptiste Giabiconi, another beautiful male models in his own right. Mathias was moved to the new and more prestigious Top Male Modeling Icons on Models.Com, making the list at #10. Lauridsen is the youngest model to appear on the list. He is also ranked #2 in the list of the most successful male models in the world, published by Forbes magazine.

Fashion Models Runway

PARIS–Skinny models are still dominating the runways of Europe, despite a furor in the media. But with all this attention on who is wearing the clothes, rather than on the clothes themselves, another troubling matter has come into focus: the lack of ethnic diversity on the runways.

With 86 shows on the Milan schedule and each show with an average cast of 25 models, the odds are there would be more than a handful of blacks, Asians and other visible minorities. But in the few shows that did have ethnically diverse models on the catwalk, the non-white faces were ridiculously easy to count – perhaps one black and rarely more than two Asians.

Things are not much better in Paris, though there are a few designers, such as Vivienne Westwood and Issey Miyake, who have a better track record when it comes to diversity.

"It's never going to be easy for black girls," says Toronto-based Honorine Uwera, who appeared in the Westwood and Miyake shows this week. "I never understood why they would only use one or two black girls because really if you are going to use any at all why not cast more?"

Fashion Model Runway
Fashion Model RunwayBackstage at the Dsquared show, Chanel Iman, who is part African-American and part Korean, says, "I would love to see different girls from all around the world with different looks and different faces in the shows."

On her many Milan go-sees, some designers told the Los Angeles-based model she did not have the look they wanted or she did not fit the clothes.

"It could be a case of supply and demand," says Michael Giannini, creative director of d'Management Group, one of the top model agencies in Milan. "In the eyes of some designers they are showing the clothes on models that their market can relate to."

What, then, to make of the African-American singer Eve and British-African actress Thandie Newton who sat front row at the Fendi show?

Giannini feels designers tend to cast more black models in their spring shows, where the fabrics are lighter and the colours more complementary to their skin tones.
Fashion Model Runway
Fashion Model RunwayThere is also a trend this season to style the models uniformly so they are indistinguishable.

"They are very android, less recognizable and have a very uniform look," notes Susie Sheffman, fashion director of Toronto's Fashion magazine. "None of the girls stand out now."

After the personality-driven supermodel era, where the models – Linda, Naomi, Cindy – were household names, designers today are focused on not letting the faces overshadow the clothes.

Giannini agrees, having been told that some of the ethnic models on his roster were too strong-looking or stood out too much in the line-up.

"But I'm hoping this, too, will pass," he says. He points to positive evidence of the few Italian designers who support ethnic models, citing Gianfranco Ferre and Roberto Cavalli.
Fashion Model Runway
Fashion Model RunwayCelia Sears, a Canadian fashion stylist based in Milan and contributor to Toronto's FQ magazine, says change must occur on both sides of the equation.

"When you go to Tokyo, the models in these ads are not Asian. They are most likely blond hair and blue eyes. There has to be change on both sides – not just from designers but from a consumer standpoint."

Uwera, a Rwandan refugee who fled to Canada seven years ago with her sister after their parents were killed, isn't letting the race hurdle get her down.

"I'm still going to castings. If they like me or not, that's not something I can control. But I'm trying just like everyone else. And that's all I can do."

Some of the reasons she has heard for not being cast is that she is too dark or too skinny. But most times no reason is given.

Recently I shot a catalog or sometimes called a look book. A designer will call me asking me to shoot their new creations. Normally if everything on the designer end goes smoothly, I will shoot two seasons ahead. So this shoot which is for Simply Mimi, we shot this in August of 2010. The collection is Spring 2011. The time table isn’t always exact but everyone does their best to get the designs manufactured in time for the shoot. This will give the designer enough time to design the catalog / look book, send it out to her buyers and ship her orders to the various stores in time for the season they were meant for. Trust me, it NEVER runs that smooth and on time lol.

So this is a small sample of what I shot. Now let me explain something to you guys. You might be saying to yourselves that it looks really boring. Well, it is ! Shooting look books is boring UNLESS it is a look book for Gucci etc. You get my drift I’m sure. However, the bare bones fact is that I would rather be shooting than sitting in a cubicle all day answering a phone or working the drive through window. ” Welcome to Kentucky Fried Chicken may I take your order please?” as I spit my gum out that I’ve had in my mouth for the past 8 hours !

Catalog / look book shooting is easy, quick and you make a pretty penny for a days work or two. Do I put all my catalog work up on my site ? Heeeelllllll no !

I show my artistic side and creative side on my site. IF the look book is cool enough then I will put it up on my site.

So what is involved in shooting a catalog / look book ? As you can see the lighting is all the same. You MUST bring out the texture of the clothes and show them well. This is not about being fancy and artistic with your lighting with dark shadows and moods. These look books are for buyers of major department stores and they want to see the garments they are investing in. Sometimes I will also shoot a lifestyle shot or two or three etc. to go along with the look book if the client asks.

So there ya go. One of my recent catalog / look books. Hit me up with any questions you have. Trust me, I haven’t included every detail in this post because I am trying to get you all to think about what else is involved and ask me questions so we can get some interaction going :-)

Hello everyone ! Let me start by apologizing for not posting for such a long time. I took time off to go on vacation, visit relatives and refresh the old motor lol. Now I am back !

I recently had the pleasure of shooting a great beauty campaign for Cala Beauty Care Products. I got the call from an advertising agency, sent them a quote, signed my contract and the planning began. They wanted everything shot on a white background. So I gathered my crew, booked the studio and had a great shoot.

You will see that the model was beautiful. We actually had two models. What was interesting about this shoot was that I had beautiful models but the focus was on the products. For instance in this shot as sexy as it is, my client wanted to show the cool silver looking acrylic nails she was wearing.
Fashion Model Photography
Fashion Model PhotographyThe wardrobe stylist matched the sexy booty shorts with that shiny silver color as well as the high heels. So as we see everything matters in a photo, even down to the shoes and shorts the model is wearing. To light the already white background my assistant used two Profoto heads on each side of the set mounted with medium sized white umbrellas. My key light was a white beauty dish. We put up white V- flats on both sides of the model to reflect some edge on to her.

The team was actually pretty large. I had two manicurists, one hair stylist, two make up artists and a wardrobe stylist. The owner of the company was there giving direction to the woman who hired me from the ad agency who acted as art director. You would think that with that many people things could get crazy, but everyone knew their place and did their job as expected. As photographers we still need to remember that we are in charge of EVERYONE. I have eyes in the back of my head too. I am always aware of everything going on around me. Occasionally I will check on the make up and hair, manicurists etc. just to make sure the boat is sailing smoothly. Ok so check out some other images.

Fashion Model PhotographyHow does a new photographer who is trying to build their portfolio get quality fashion models to test with ? I have been asked this question many many times. So I figured I would blog about it.

I will tell you how I did it. Back in the day there was no internet, well there was but it was all dial up and very very slow. Not many sites had made their way on the world wide web yet especially actual model agencies. So the only way to look at models to test with was to literally walk into t he agency tell the first person I saw that I was there to look at model zed cards to shoot for my portfolio. LOL the receptionist walked me to the woman who handled the “New Faces” board. Was I nervous ? Actually no I was not. I compare it to when a child is faced with a task and has never experienced failure so they don’t know what failure feels like. I had no reason to be afraid because I had no idea what to expect !

So I explained to the agent that I was a new photographer who needed to step up the quality of my portfolio / book with real models who had that model look. Now you are probably asking what did I walk into the agency with ? I had a book. I had photos of my sister who used to model and still looked good. They were mostly head shots. I had photos of her beautiful friends and they introduced me to their friends and so on. Of course what was missing was the styling, make up and that “fashion look” and I knew that. I even had some family portraits thrown in with some great portraits of children I had shot.

America's Next Top Models

America's Next Top Model season 10 ended with a huge surprise! For the first time, a plus size model won the season! Models on 10th Season of America's Next Top Model (listed from first eliminated to winner) were: Kimberly, Atalya, Allison, Amis, Marvita, Aimee, Claire, Stacy Ann, Lauren, Katarzyna, Dominique, Fatima, Anya and winner: Whitney!

Danielle really proved herself over the course of the show. She was weak in tech beginning but gain strength as the weeks progressed. Danielle had to deal with tough America's Next Top Model judges and constant criticism of her accent and a wide gap in her teeth.

Danielle finally fixed the gap in her two front teeth to be much smaller (though she never closed it) and has constantly worked on her speech.

Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Explores Role of Fashion Models as Muses of Recent Eras. Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion, the spring 2009 exhibition organized by The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, will explore the reciprocal relationship between high fashion and evolving ideals of beauty, focusing on iconic fashion models in the latter half of the 20th century and their roles in projecting, and sometimes inspiring, the fashion of their respective eras. The exhibition will be on view at the Metropolitan from May 6 through August 9, 2009. The exhibition is made possible by Marc Jacobs. To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, the Museum’s Costume Institute Gala Benefit will take place on Monday, May 4, 2009. Marc Jacobs will serve as Honorary Chair of the Gala. Fashion editorial, advertising, and runway photography plus video footage of models, actresses, socialites, and rock stars who epitomize their epochs, will be used throughout the galleries to explicate the fashion zeitgeist.

High Fashion ModelSo you all know that I have NEVER used Photoshop to TOTALLY change my photos. The only reason Photoshop is ever used is to smooth skin and dust spots. But a recent shoot I did was in a classic car museum and there was no way in hell that we were going to be able to take these cars out to a location. The solution was to change the background in Photoshop. If we didn’t change it then the whole shoot would be a total loss. I lit these with a ring light and some edge lights. My digital compositor did an amazing job at creating a classy yet edgy look ! I would love to hear your opinions and thoughts !

Matthew Williamson's New Diffusion Line

Matthew Williamson will be launching his first diffusion line called MW Matthew Williamson. The new fashion line includes 250 pieces that ranges from $400 to $600. So, what can you expect from MW Williamson? Here's the designer's reply: "The main line is known more for print and color and that sort of red-carpet aesthetic, glamour and jet-set and all those kind of ideas. So whilst those ideas have some synthesis within the diffusion line, I wanted to make it more about an urban wardrobe and less about specialty pieces."
